JAMES MADISON QUOTE - 1822

"A popular government without popular information, or the means of acquiring it, is but a Prologue to a Farce or a Tragedy; or, perhaps both. Knowledge will forever govern ignorance; and a people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power knowledge gives."

Monday June 14, 2010 was a regular City Council Meeting. Previous related posting to this meeting was the work session held on June 7, 2010 and may be found within this blog at this link: http://arklite.blogspot.com/2010/06/scottsboro-city-council-meeting-with.html

There was no old business. New Business: 1)The City Council voted to release all funds for the Senior Center that had been provided for building and furnishing the Senior Center by the Jackson County Legislative Delegation. Ms. Williams, Senior Center Director, had approached the City Council at the last work session to request funds be released for blinds and a bookcase. A motion was brought forward and approved to release all funds. Ms. Williams will be able to contact Mr. Wheeler, City Financial Director, to request the necessary funds instead of acquiring the approval of the City Council. 2) Property at the airport was declared surplus, a 2001 John Deer mower with no deck and inoperable will be sold on govdeals.com. Proceeds from the sale will be applied to the Scottsboro Airport Capital Expense Fund. 3) A Sales Tax Holiday for the purchase of school supplies was approved for August 6, 7 and 8, 2010. 4) The council approved a bid for the purchase of a new Pumper Truck for the Fire Department. The bid accepted was $607,890 from Pro-Fire Equipment Inc. of Pelham, Al. Delivery date is estimated at 165 days. 5) Jackson Paving was granted the bid for construction and paving of a frontage road in front of the old police station on John T. Reed Pkwy. The old police station will be auctioned on July 17, 2010, my link on the auction announcement: http://arklite.blogspot.com/2010/05/scottsboro-city-council-meeting.html 6) Notification Report of the City of Scottsboro Personnel Board decision. The City Council may review the Personnel Board decision and affirm or reverse the decision. The City Attorney stated if the council takes no action within 30 days the boards decision will stand. 7) Vacancy on Airport Board announced by Mayor, interested applicants must have their request turned in to the City Clerk by July 9, 2010 by 4:30PM. 8) Discussion of the STOP sign to be placed on the corner of South Broad and Laurel Streets. The rules of the council are required to be set aside for the ordinance to be brought forward and voted on at the same meeting. A motion was made and seconded for the rules to be set aside, however a unanimous vote is required, Mr. Hodges voted no. Link to The Daily Sentinel article which includes the history about the only corner on the square that does not have a STOP sign. http://www.thedailysentinel.com/story.lasso?ewcd=97f0a508c6100f0d 9) The House of Ruth property was declared surplus, the property was also approved for demolition. Apparently the house has considerable water damage and is in need of extensive repair. 10) Approval was granted for a matching funds Burns JEG Federal Grant for the purchase and update of Scottsboro's communications equipment. The grant is for a matching funds grant in the amount of $125,000.
