JAMES MADISON QUOTE - 1822

"A popular government without popular information, or the means of acquiring it, is but a Prologue to a Farce or a Tragedy; or, perhaps both. Knowledge will forever govern ignorance; and a people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power knowledge gives."

Discussion from Sheriffs Department regarding need for automobiles; Chief Deputy Harnen stated 2 new vehicles had been purchased from Pistol Permit Funds, 2 more are needed. A small fleet of used vehicles from other agencies was purchased, however, mechanical problems resulted in one vehicle out of 4 blowing an engine.

The Chief Deputy also described several officers had applied for jobs with the Jackson County Sheriffs Department. However, due to the high cost of family insurance hiring new officers is inhibited. The county pays for employee health insurance but does not provide for a family insurance cost share program, which cost employees approximately $400 - $500 monthly.
