JAMES MADISON QUOTE - 1822

"A popular government without popular information, or the means of acquiring it, is but a Prologue to a Farce or a Tragedy; or, perhaps both. Knowledge will forever govern ignorance; and a people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power knowledge gives."

Demolition of Private Property Issue  http://arklite.blogspot.com/search/label/demolition%20on%20private%20property

Scottsboro political officials refuse to accept the fact they are not following the law regarding demolition and repair on private property - abatement of public nuisances. Code of Alabama reference 11-53B-1 thru 16. Elected Officials attempt to place blame on the individual presenting the problem to the city council.

Mayor states, "We have abated 26 buildings in the past 2 years and we have done at least a half dozen in this exact same way..." So the Mayor is admitting that he has cost the taxpayers a substantial amount of money for not following the law? Smith states, "...We went to her, she didn't have anything to do with it...(reference Gross property demolition on E. Willow St.)" "We went to her," does that include the accidental mowing and lawn care of private property and charging half price for demolition? Mr. Wallingsford states, "...remain focused, lets not get distracted, we have things to get done...," which apparently does not involve following the laws of the state regarding demolition and repair of private property. Then, there are the dilapidated unsafe structures surrounding the square where some roofs are collapsing and leaking. Will the city make repairs for property around the square at half cost? Surely the city wants to be fair in its application of policy and police powers!?

The city is in direct competition with companies that do this same work. Only they have to buy a license from the city and still do not get a chance to bid on these projects. Something is bad wrong with this picture. We have to meet all the guide lines of safe removal of asbestos and LEAD PAINT.

You are correct anonymous poster. This is what the people receive when they vote for 25 year plus political appointees for public office. Then re-elect them time after time. The city council and mayor claim they support local business, but this is an example of the government system they support, one of right wing socialism instead of the Republic. Worse, they do not follow established law.

I don't like the idea of the city going to property owners and saying we can do x. There should be a public notice published saying that the city provides this service. The cost for the city to do it should be higher than market rates to encourage property owners to use local businesses.

The city rate should be encouraging the removal of blighted buildings and property and in case of code violations issue notices to property owners to fix violations or the city will do so at cost that is higher than that available in local market.

Again, Anonymous Poster, you are correct. The City Council is required to publish by resolution the fixation of costs regarding any demolition or repair to private property. The city has been secretive in their actions, this is wrong. Every time city officials violate law and fail to perform the job they were elected to perform they libel Scottsboro citizens for their negligent actions.

Ask the Head of the Sanitation Department why everyone else that brings asbestos to landfill has to have them double wrapped in poly. They also can not be mixed with other demolition debris. The City Departments seem to have a double standard that goes their way all the time. The Mayor has to back the Department Heads up or else the rules would fit everyone.
