Scottsboro City Council Meeting


Old Business: The Roseberry Rescue Group spokesman, Retired Circuit court Judge Wallace Harralson, spoke to the city council in an information briefing to inform them the Jackson County Legislative Delegation has agreed to disburse $42,500.00 in public funds to the Roseberry Rescue Group for the purpose of elimination of aquatic nuisance weeds in the area around their private boat docks and water access to their private property on Guntersville Reservoir, Dry Creek and Roseberry Creek area. The City Council Attorney, Mr. Steve Kennamer, spoke concerning the issue. Mr. Kennamer stated that it would not be necessary for any further action from the City Council since the requirements were met concerning the cost share of this project. The city had previously agreed to fund a share of the project, $42,500.00 if 2 other entities would contribute a like share. The Roseberry Rescue Group and the Legislative Delegation have agreed, along with the City Council to fund the project. The County Commission would not agree to issue public funds for this project.

New Business: 1) Resolution for a Community Development Block Grant was approved for the Water Sewer and Gas Board. 2) An appropriation of $1000.00 was approved for the Catfish Festival. 3) Resolution was approved for Phase 1 to support a Scottsboro Bike Trail. 4) There was a bid opening for the purchase of a tractor for the Scottsboro Street Department. Boykin Tractor was approved as low bidder meeting all specifications in the amount of $35,690.00.

Citizen Presentation: Mr. Kelly Goodowens made a presentation to garner support from the City Council for periodic music festivals at the Jackson County Courthouse Gazebo. Mr. Goodowens was informed that he would need the approval of the Jackson County Commission for this project, the City Council supported the idea.

Mayor and Council Report: 1) There will be an Open House at the new Scottsboro Police Department, old city hall on south Broad St., Wednesday, May 13, 2009 from 1PM till 5:30PM. 2) Catfish Festival is this weekend. 3) Mr. Speers announced the Ben Sanford Boys & Girls Club will hold a cookout and Bar-B-Q Saturday, May 16, 2009 from 11AM till 2PM. Mr. Speers stated there is delivery available. 4) The Mayor announced the Scottsboro Police Department will be applying for a grant for a patrol vehicle in the amount of $18,000.
