1) Discussion concerning funding of Career Center office. City, County and Legislative Delegation jointly contributes to funding of of the Career Center. It was estimated that the amount of funding required from the city would be $5,000.00 or less. Definitive funding amount would be acquired prior to vote at next council session. It was stated that between 20 and 60 citizens per day make use of this employment service. It was also announced that the "Center" will be assisting approximately 200 Shaw Employees very shortly. 2) Review "Barge, Wagner, Sumner & Cannon Engineer professional services action concerning "Word Field" Municipal Airport grants for extension of runway threshold and improvements to taxiway. 3) City vehicle tire bid discussion concerning following the state bid list for tires, which the nearest dealer on the state bid list that participates in selling the specific Bridgestone/Firestone Tires needed was at Ft. Payne. Discussion centered on requirements of the bid law as to local bidding. It was pointed out by the City Attorney that tires may be bid upon locally but specifications must be accurately described. 4) Consider resolution for Council of Aging, matching funds grant request for Public Transportation. 5) Discussion concerning City Retirees to continue Blue Cross and Blue Shield medical insurance after age of 65. Will require change in city ordinance. Catastrophic illness could cause a rise in employee cost. There are 10 retired City employees that would be affected.
Reports: Mayor- Vote Tomorrow at Rec Com on South Broad St. Mayor reported that he was to go back into hospital tomorrow for a final surgery to "remove a lymph gland." He stated his Doctor has declared him Cancer Free. Thanks to the Boy Scouts for giving Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.
